Fishing Industry: Norway increases salmon exports to China

Norway’s exports of fresh salmon are growing at a strong double digit annual rate to China, reports David Hayes.

The current fashion among the growing middle class to eat Japanese food when dining out has had the unexpected side effect of boosting consumption of high priced imported fresh salmon which is popular served as sashimi and on sushi.

China has grown, during the past two decades, to become the world’s largest producer, consumer and exporter of fisheries products. At the same time the country has become one of the world’s fastest growing markets for imported fresh salmon.

SIAL Paris Food Exhibit: Canada helps boost demand for its agricultural exports to France - by S.C.

The Canadian Harper Government will help raise consumer awareness and boost demand for Canada's high-quality food and beverages by showcasing the diversity of Canadian products at an event to be held tomorrow in Paris, France. International media, consumers, and importers will enjoy a unique opportunity to experience Canada's best food products.

This Savour Canada event will help position Canadian exporters in advance of SIAL Paris, one of the world's premier food exhibitions that will take place from October 21 to 25, 2012. More than 140,000 professional visitors from the food industry are expected to attend this year's event. Canada will have a strong presence there with 68 Canadian exhibitors participating, including 36 export-ready companies in the Canada Pavilion.

Canadian agri-food exports to the European Union are valued at $2.4 billion annually on average. Market development is a priority for the Harper Government under Growing Forward 2, and this food promotion event is another example of what is being done to enhance competitiveness and to drive innovation and long-term growth in Canadian agriculture.

Prior to the SIAL Exibit a food promotion event will be held at the Canadian Ambassador's official residence in Paris and will feature a cooking demonstration by two of the residence's chefs, Jérome Trayssac and Anthony Cady. The menu offers a wide variety of Canadian foods for guests to savour, including lobster, scallops, snow crab, bison, cranberries, blueberries, and wine.

Sweden to request EU and WTO to impose ban on unregulated import and sale of live lobster from US and Canada

The American lobster
Sweden will apply to the European Commission and the World Trade Organization to impose a ban on the unregulated import and sales of live American lobster from the United States and Canada.

The Swedish government hopes to enact the ban by next summer, with Norway and other neighboring countries to follow Sweden’s lead. An exemption for importers who have a closed system for boiling lobsters is being included.

The proposal lists three major reasons for the ban: American lobster (Homarus americanus) carries several contagious diseases that could spread to native populations of European lobster; American lobster is a hardy species that can travel long distances and can compete for food and shelter with the native European lobster; and there is a risk of hybridization with native European lobster, which may result in negative genetic effects with consequences for Swedish and other European stocks.

The EU Commission is currently developing a proposal for an EU Invasive Species Strategy. It is unclear whether the proposal will include new import restrictions. It is also uncertain whether the American lobster will be included in any list of invasive species.

Individual member states may not restrict trade and the spreading of invasive alien species based on current regulations for Plant Protection, Animal Health and Welfare and Use of Species in Aquaculture.

However, in 2003 Sweden succeeded in implementing a ban on live freshwater crayfish based on the Species Protection Ordinance that regulates entry of live freshwater crayfish in Swedish legislation and was approved by the EU Commission.

EU-Economy: Lower Euro improves foreign exports for Europe as Consumer goods firms and exporters lead rally in European stocks

European stocks rose Friday, led by consumer-goods companies, as falling commodity prices eased concern that inflation would force central banks to lift interest rates. Carrefour, Ryanair Holdings and Royal Bank of Scotland climbed after prices for oil, gold, copper and corn declined. European Aeronautic Defense & Space Company rallied 5.3 percent as the euro slipped to the lowest since February against the dollar, boosting the value of its overseas sales.
