Italy - Sardinia: Biblical plague of locusts is swarming over Italian farmlands. Could it happen in the US?

The Italian island of Sardinia is dealing with its worst swarm of locusts in 70 years as the insects destroy crops, infest houses and devastate animal grazing pastures covering 6,200 acres, according to Reuters.

“I have never seen anything like it in 53 years of life,” breeder Luigi Puggioni told the Italian newspaper La Nuova.

Weather patterns played a role in Sardinia, as droughts in 2017 and heavy rains in 2018 created “the ideal climate for locusts to emerge from fallow land and then move to cultivated fields to eat,” Michele Arbau from the Italian agricultural association Coldiretti told Reuters.

However, the Sardinian swarm that evokes references to the Biblical plague in the Book of Exodus -- “the locusts swarmed across the land and settled over the entire territory of Egypt” -- is not as unusual as it may seem.

In 2013, a massive swarm of locusts roughly 30 million strong hit Egypt and the Middle East, and in 2004, an infestation in Africa and the Middle East cost $400 million as well as harvest losses of $2.5 billion, according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization.

Italy: Sardinia assesses the damage after Cyclone Cleopatra

Sardinia has started the long process of recovery after being hit by Cyclone Cleopatra.

The storm brought 45 centimetres of rainfall in just 90 minutes in the early hours of Tuesday, November 19.
At least 16 people were killed and the flooding destroyed the homes of thousands more.

Geologist Paolo Messina at Rome’s Centre for National Research told euronews why he thought the level of destruction was so high:

“Sardinia is one of the regions that has been seriously neglected. The main problem is how the territory has been maintained. Riverbeds should be kept clean, for example. Also, building on high-risk areas should be forbidden.

The fact that all this hasn’t been done properly has led us to this situation,” Messina explained.

ITALY: US Aluminium maker Alcoa starts Sardinia plant shutdown

US Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. began shutting down its factory on the Italian island of Sardinia on Saturday, laying off hundreds of workers in a region already hard-hit by unemployment and economic crisis.

Alcoa said "the economic situation and the burdens imposed by the European regulatory system" forced the decision, and the process of shutting down the smelter and foundry would be complete within a few weeks.
On Friday, Italy's industry ministry said Swiss multinational Glencore was weighing a purchase of the loss-making plant and would give its assessment within a week, leaving open the possibility of a last-minute rescue.

Alcoa said it would maintain the facility so that it could be restarted for a period of one year, with employees retained until the end of December 2012.

Colorful protests by workers brought the factory's possible closure into political focus this week, as Mario Monti's technocrat government struggles to bring in reforms and cut the debt burden that has made Italy a focal point of the euro zone crisis.

Real Estate: Qatar fund snaps up hotels on Italy's Sardinia

Qatar signed a deal Monday to buy the operator of four luxury resorts and other properties on the island of Sardinia as the wealthy Gulf emirate looks to bolster ties with Italy.

The purchase coincided with a visit to Rome by the country's emir. It is the latest deal in a European shopping spree that has given the natural-gas rich state a stake in European banks, energy companies and some of the continent's best known brands.

State-owned Qatar Holding, an arm of the country's sovereign wealth fund, said it will acquire resort operator Smeralda Holding from Los Angeles-based real estate investment firm Colony Capital.
