Germany and Canada hold energy supply talks
New German Chancellor Olaf Scholz
and his deputy, Economic Affairs and Climate Action Minister Robert
Habeck, kicked off a three-day trip to Canada on Monday, seeking to
arrange short-term gas-based energy solutions and to explore
longer-term, cleaner options, such as green hydrogen.
In a joint press conference in Montreal, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hailed his German counterpart Scholz as an "extremely important progressive voice," and expressed optimism about mutually beneficial business investments and cooperation defending Ukraine from Russian aggression.

The Netherlands: Dutch coalition talks deadlocked 5 months after election
The Netherlands appeared to be heading toward talks to form a minority coalition after efforts to piece together a Cabinet made up of five parties from across the political spectrum broke down Tuesday.
More than five months after a general election left the Dutch political landscape fragmented, two key parties said they do not want to form a new government with a pair of leftist parties.
The decision by caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte's conservative People's Party for Freedom and Democracy — known by its Dutch acronym VVD — and the CDA Christian Democrats came after months of talks between party leaders and an official who is attempting to cobble together the coalition.

EU eyes talks with Taliban but no plans to recognize them - by Lorne Cook and Kirsten Grieshaber
The European Union has no immediate plans to recognize the Taliban after their sweeping victory in Afghanistan but will talk with the militants to ensure that European citizens and Afghans who have worked with the EU can leave safely, the bloc’s top diplomat said Tuesday.
peaking after leading emergency talks among the EU’s foreign ministers, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also underlined the importance of opening talks with the Taliban to help prevent a new exodus of refugees as a humanitarian crisis unfolds in the conflict-ravaged country.
“We have to get in touch with the authorities in Kabul, whatever they are. The Taliban have won the war, so we will have to talk with them,” Borrell told reporters. “This dialogue will also have to focus on the means to prevent the return of foreign terrorists.”
“It’s not a matter of official recognition, it’s a matter of dealing with” the Taliban, Borrell said.
The EU has decided to suspend development assistance to the Afghan government now that the Taliban has seized power, but the 27-nation bloc is weighing whether to boost humanitarian aid.

Dutch PM withheld information from parliament on talks with Russia: report
Prime Minster Mark Rutte incompletely informed parliament about talks that senior Dutch officials had with Russia. Rutte said that these conversations were only a "free exchange of views", but the talks included controversial topics and agreements were made, Follow the Money and The Investigative Desk reported.
The Netherlands officially severed ties with Russia after flight MH17 was shot down in 2014, but communications were picked up again three years later. Senior officials from the Ministries of Economic Affairs and Foreign Affairs resumed talks with their Russian colleagues. The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, only found out about this after the two research platforms reported about it earlier in the year.

Russia In High-Level Contact With US Over Ukraine
Russia said on Monday (5 April) it was in high-level contact with the United States about tensions over Ukraine and dismissed fears of a Russian military buildup even as it vowed to respond to new Ukrainian sanctions.
US President Joe Biden used a first phone call with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday to offer “unwavering” support after Western nations and NATO voiced concern over Russian troop movements near Ukraine.
There has been a recent spike in violence in Ukraine’s eastern Donbass region where Kyiv’s troops have battled Russian-backed separatist forces in a conflict it estimates has killed 14,000 people since 2014.

Brexit: EU and UK to 'intensify' Brexit talks
The European Commission on Friday released a statement saying the "EU
and the UK have agreed to intensify discussions over the coming days."
The statement followed a meeting between EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier and Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay.
The UK is set to leave the European Union on 31 October as outstanding issues remain entrenched on efforts to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland after Brexit.

Turkey-EU Relations: EU may suspend Turkey customs union talks
EU states will threaten to freeze talks on an upgraded customs union with Turkey if it does not stop drilling for gas
in disputed waters near Cyprus, according to draft conclusions of a
General Affairs Council on Tuesday seen by the Bloomberg news agency.
The EU "stands ready to respond appropriately and in full solidarity with Cyprus," the draft text said, following defiant Turkish statements over the weekend.

EU: Ireland is caught between Brexiteers and Brussels - by Joe McCarth
In a letter to the Guardian Joe McCarthy writes "Rafael Behr’s brilliant evisceration of the UK government’s shambolic
handling of Brexit makes for depressing reading from the Dublin side of
the Irish Sea (As Tories slug it out, does anyone care about Ireland?, 15 November). However, the suspicion remains here that the problem is not just with London but with Brussels too.
Brexit was initially met with anger by most Irish people but the upset receded as everyday life got in the way. Now it is back, and the island of Ireland is staring down the barrel of a hard border. These are glum and worrying times. Ireland is caught between undoubtedly ignorant rightwing Eurosceptic British politicians and the mammoth Brussels bureaucracy.
Europe will let us down if it feels it is absolutely necessary to do so for its own prosperity and survival. In 2011, the European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet warned the Irish finance minister Michael Noonan that a “bomb would go off” in Dublin if Ireland dared to burn bondholders.
The Irish people have been solely carrying the massive debt burden of our banking collapse ever since – including, scandalously, the huge losses of international speculative investors.
When push comes to shove, will Ireland be a sacrificial lamb for Brussels in the Brexit negotiations as it was during the banking crisis in 2011? Quite possibly yes. The only difference this time, it seems, is that we might be sacrificed primarily for long-term political, rather than financial, stability in the wider European Union “family”."

The Netherlands: Talks on forming a new government resume after lengthy break

The negotiations should have restarted on Tuesday after a lengthy break, but were postponed so that GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver could attend his mother’s funeral. ‘My mother would have wanted it no other way,’
Klaver told reporters on his way to the talks. The talks are taking place between the two Liberal parties VVD and D66, the Christian Democrats and the green party GroenLinks.
Three main issues are likely to provide the most sticking points: income policy, climate change and immigration. In terms of income policy, GroenLinks is keen to reduce the pay gap between the rich and poor while the VVD wants to widen the gap between social security benefits and salaries.
The VVD and CDA are opposed to several of GroenLink’s proposals to tackle climate change, although all four parties’ think-tanks have drawn up a common strategy for the environment.
