EU New Year celebrations: New Year′s fireworks accidents kill at least five in Europe

Five people were killed in separate fireworks accidents in Germany and Denmark during celebrations to mark the New Year, authorities said on Thursday.

German police said a 19-year-old man died early on Thursday in Striegistal in the eastern state of Saxony when trying to light illegal firecrackers. They said another man was severely injured in the accident.

Another man, 18, died of severe head injuries in the town of Alveslohe in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein after being hit by a firecracker.

Among the many injured during the night into Thursday was a 23-year-old many in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, who lost four fingers when a firecracker blew up in his hands. A nine-year-old boy in Hesse was also wounded in the neck when a man tried to fire a rocket with a gun.

Jewish cemetery in Poland attacked by vandals

Vandals have desecrated a Jewish cemetery in Poland, spraying swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans on tombstones and memorial plaques, an official said Monday.

The vandals also wrote “This is Poland, not Israel’’ on one sign at the Jewish cemetery in Wysokie Mazowieckie, a town in eastern Poland, according to the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland.

Police are investigating the attack, which occurred Sunday night in a town that has tried to preserve the memory of the Jews who once lived there. The cemetery, which was restored six years ago, is not fully fenced in and it was the first time vandals attacked it, said Michael Traison, an American lawyer who has raised funds to restore the cemetery.

UK's Clegg says Israeli settlements 'vandalism' - by David Stringer

Britain's deputy prime minister accused Israel Monday of carrying out "deliberate vandalism" by continuing to build settlements on land the Palestinians hope will form part of a future state.

In an escalation of Britain's previous condemnations of Israeli construction, Nick Clegg warned that continued settlement building was jeopardizing prospects for a peace deal.

"Once you've placed physical facts on the ground that makes it impossible to deliver something that everyone has for years agreed is the ultimate destination ... it is an act of deliberate vandalism to the basic premise on which negotiations have taken place for years and years and years," Clegg said, referring to settlement construction.

Vandalism disrupts French high-speed train service

Vandals jammed iron bars into two electrical lines on a high-speed rail track in northern France, disrupting service Saturday on more than 30 trains to London, Brussels and other routes, the national rail authority said. No injuries were immediately reported, but hundreds of people were stranded for hours on the tracks and others crowded into train stations awaiting delayed departures. The chief of the SNCF national rail network said it was the fourth act of "malice, even sabotage," on high-speed French rail lines in the past three weeks.

Six youths were arrested in Copenhagen for setting cars and dumpsters ablaze and throwing stones at police in a fifth night of riots in a predominantly immigrant area of the Danish capital, police said Friday. "We've had six arrests so far. They've been charged with throwing stones at police and setting fires to cars and waste containers," Chief Inspector Henrik Olesen of the Copenhagen police told AFP. At least 11 cars were torched in various neighbourhoods of Copenhagen, and 10 others in the nearby town of Kokkedal. On Thursday, 17 youths were arrested for rioting the previous night. "We don't know why they're rioting. I think it's because they're bored. Some people say it's because of the cartoons but that's not my opinion," Olesen said.

Note EU-Digest: Even though the Danes asked for this by republishing the cartoons in Denmark, Muslim immigrants need to understand a) that we have a secular society in the EU and B) that the EU respect the freedom of the press, religion and also consider women equal to men. We can only hope the Danish government will revoke the Danish/European citizenship from these vandals and extradite them to their country of origin.

During the new year celebrations hordes of Dutch youngsters and hooligans set fire to cars in many urban areas of the Netherlands. They also threw rocks at ambulances trying to bring people wounded by fireworks to the hospital and at policemen trying to arrest people who were setting fires to cars and acting in a disorderly way. Nearly all of these vandals were "original" Dutch citizens.

The Netherlands is not what it used to be and the Dutch are leaving the country in hordes. This past year the number of Dutch emigrants going to other countries has been unprecedented as well as ‘extraordinary’, according to NIDI (Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute) researcher Harry van Dalen.

Government coalition PvdA spokesman for Migration and Integration, Jeroen Dijsselbloem agrees that violence has increased in the Netherlands and that the government isn’t doing enough to combat small crimes such as theft and vandalism. As a result many people are leaving Holland. In 2005 92,000 immigrants arrived whereas 121,000 Dutch citizens left the country.

However Dutch emigrants do return yearly to the Netherlands, in 2005 21,110 emigrants returned and in 2004, 19,447 emigrants. Despite the numbers coming back, the Netherlands continues to be faced with an exodus of mainly well educated people.

With great job opportunities and living conditions in other parts of the EU, and no more work permits required for EU Citizens, most of the young and well-educated Dutch emigrants are now moving to areas which can provide them with the security and quality of life they once had in Holland. France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Spain are high on the list of these emigrants. Today even large numbers of highly educated second generation Dutch citizens of Turkish descent are returning to Turkey, were they can expect to earn higher salaries and best of all more respect and a better climate. As one Shell employee working at its the Hague headquarters said,"if Total France offers me a job I will be out of here immediately". The Dutch government better take note, because you can't run a country with hooligans in control.
