Brasil: Similarities in rightwing presidential election demonstrations in Brasil and US

On Sunday, demonstrators supporting Brazil's nationalist former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress and government buildings in Brasilia to overturn an election which brought leftist leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to power earlier this month.

The rioters ransacked political buildings -- while parading the Brazilian flag with its motto 'ordem e progresso', 'order and progress' -- in a botched attempt to reverse the peaceful transfer of power.

The biggest assault on Brazil's democracy in decades, news of Sunday's uprising has sent shockwaves around the world. But what has most alarmed many are the echoes of the US uprising almost exactly two years prior, when supporters of Republican ex-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington DC on 6 January in an attempt to prevent Joe Biden from taking office.

A tale of two Presidents: How the legal troubles of a former French president could be a blueprint for Trump's

Tale of two countries: Donald Trump is reputed not to read much, and he certainly won't want to read about the trial of Nicolas Sarkozy, the former right-wing French president.

Like Trump, Sarkozy has always loved the limelight. The French media call him a bête de scène, a political beast who craves public attention, whether good or bad.

Like Trump, he was twice divorced and then remarried to a model, Carla Bruni, in his case while he was in office as president.

Donald Trump better take note: COVID 19 Today and China’s Great Famine

Between 1959 and 1961, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) underwent the Great Chinese Famine, one of the country’s darkest times.

Yang Jisheng, senior journalist from the Xinhua News Agency, estimated that China registered 36 million deaths back then due to starvation. It was one of the greatest tragedies in human history.

Although current global circumstances are vastly different now, the following question offers itself up quite naturally: Can any lesson be derived from that experience in China 60 years ago for today’s world that is facing the worst pandemic of the last century?

Iran and the US: The Ayatollah in the White House - by Stephen Richter -

Since the 1950s, the history of the United States and of Iran has been amazingly intertwined.

Unfortunately, at decisive turns in history, the two countries’ relationship was a tragic one. T

The action taken by one typically triggered disastrous effects in the other.

Usually, the lubricant that facilitated – and also doomed – the interaction between the two nations was the question of the ownership of, or easy access to, oil.

That was the case, for example, when the U.S. government at the time collaborated with the UK on toppling the duly elected government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh in 1953. He was ousted in a coup just because he wanted to have the Iranian people benefit from the spoils of their nation’s oil re

Or when the U.S. government in the 1970s clung to the ever more despotic acting Shah of Iran. U.S. protection was not only insufficient to prevent, but also actually fomented the Shah’s eventual ouster in the popular, religiously inspired Iranian revolution of 1979.

But of late, stunning parallels between Donald Trump and Ayatollah Khameini have come into sight. While Donald Trump does not wear a black turban, like the ayatollahs of Iran, his hairdo is no less prominent or protrusive. In addition, it is far more colorful.

Another bewildering commonality between the religious leaders of Iran and the current U.S. President is even more troublesome. The fact that Trump’s relationship to science, evidence and the truth is on par with that of the Ayatollahs, is probably his greatest betrayal of American traditions.

USA: Sodom and Gomorrah repeat ? - Southern California ‘like a war zone’ as raging wildfires grow

California: A repeat of Sodom and Gomorrah?
Wildfires continued to ravage Southern California for a fifth day Friday, with growing blazes and new fires sending rivers of flames through communities and injuring several people.

The largest of the fires spread across more than 200 square miles by Friday morning and crept toward the college town of Santa Barbara, while a new blaze in San Diego County grew quickly and dangerously, forcing a new round of evacuations.

These dangers came as firefighters confronted a half-dozen blazes across the region, fires that imperiled communities and homes, burned through streets and roared over mountains, forcing many to flee and leaving them with no idea when they could return home or if they would have anything to return to. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed and thousands more remained in danger, officials said.

The San Diego County blaze, dubbed the Lilac Fire, started Thursday morning and grew to more than 4,000 acres by that night. Ron Lane, the county’s deputy chief administrative officer, said it had never experienced December winds like these before.

The Lilac blaze destroyed at least 20 buildings, and three people suffered burns, according to county officials. Another person was injured by smoke inhalation, while two firefighters combating the blaze were injured. Authorities ordered a wave of evacuations and said more could follow.

The US must feel like it had more than its share of bad news, as this year comes to a close. It does raise the question, at least with some, as to why this is happening?  For people who are familiar with the Holy Bible - Genesis 19, it seems there are now many similarities and parallels between America and the ancient city of Sodom.

Indeed it is interesting to note that all the things that in the past would be cause for great shame, embarrassment and personal humiliation in a morally healthy society, are now done with no sense of shame or embarrassment in today's society.

Personal morality is of fundamental importance to a society. A building is only as good as the material it is built with. The people of a society are the fundamental building blocks of a society.
All of the institutions of a society are composed of people.

Institutions are structures consisting of people. \\

The institutions are only as good as the people who make them up. Government from the national level down to the local level, the legal system, the school system, the health system, the police system, the military. Corporate and personal businesses.

People have become acclimated to a climate of wickedness and depravity. They like all the moral permissiveness. It suits them. They are comfortable with it. It gives them license and freedom.

Freedom to do whatever they wish. They are so comfortable with their environment that they are no longer able to distinguish between right and wrong. Anyone who objects to their depraved ways is either seen as a radical, a lunatic, or a crazy nut.

The Biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah illustrates a very important fact:

The Holy Bible is not a broad-minded, tolerant book.It is, in a sense, a very narrow-minded, intolerant book.

God is a God of righteousness who is patient but not infinitely patient. This is illustrated by the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, also by the story of Noah and the flood, and many other stories.

Christ showed anger and righteous indignation on certain occasions. God  certainly has love and mercy for the penitent sinner and the person who loves and serves him but he can be very severe with the unrepentant.

It might be a good thing to keep the above in mind when we are struck by calamities,  either our own,  or by disasters, like the present fires in California.

US Politics: Ted Cruz & Tom Cruise Have More In Common Than You Would Ever Have Believed - by Zoe Ferguson

Two men are about to make a star turn in the American media, and their ascensions couldn’t come at a more appropriate time. Just as Ted Cruz is running for the Republican Presidential nomination, his potential alternate self Tom Cruise is facing the release of a new Scientology documentary this weekend that will call him out. As both men prepare to have their personal lives analyzed by the national public, we hope they might find solace in one another’s struggles and triumphs. After all, with such similar names, how different could Tom Cruise and Ted Cruz be?

While the two men may have their differences, their kindred souls are more than apparent when the facts are examined. It’s true that Cruise is 52 and Cruz is eight years younger, at 44, but they are stunningly similar public figures: both have controversial political, scientific, and religious beliefs that have put them at the center of debates about ethics, morality, and truth.

Both are leading figures who have captured the American imaginary and will no doubt continue to be featured in newspapers and tabloid magazines alike for years to come. And best of all, their names are essentially twins of each other. Here are a list of nine reason why you could be talking about Ted Cruz but people could think you were talking about Tom Cruise, or vice versa.

While Cruise’s religion, Scientology, was literally founded by a science fiction author, Cruz has come under just as much fire for his questionable theories about the nonexistence of global warming. Cruz told Seth Meyers:
