EU Benita Ferrero-Waldner - The conclusion of agreements on liberalizing visa and readmission regulations would be a great step forward in Russia

Relations between the EU and Russia have been given new impetus by the adoption of roadmaps for four "Common Spaces". These encompass a whole range of policy areas of common interest, from economic issues, to environment and energy, security matters, culture and education. The roadmaps have established an operational work programme for the coming years. This is a major joint endeavour - but it will only be credible if we deliver tangible progress.

At the October 4 Summit, we will focus on the roadmaps and their implementation. "If we are able to conclude in time for the summit two new agreements on visa facilitation and readmission (the obligation to take back people found illegally on each other's territory and ensuring greater flexibility in the issuing procedures of short-term visas) it would be a major step forward. We are still making last minute attempts to achieve this", said Ferrero
