With the US immigration rallies on front pages everywhere, it's almost impossible to not draw parallels between the new US plans and the historically unsuccessful European plans. America's guest worker program mirrors the 'gastarbeiter' program on this side of the Atlantic. It's unfair to say it's been nothing but trouble, but one only need to look to the last round of riots (the last ones, not the student ones - ah the French!) in France to get a feeling for how well Europe's immigration program has worked.
