Sarkozy Loses Ground in French Presidential Race Amid Party Row - by Francois de Beaupuy

France's Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy lost ground to opposition lawmaker Segolene Royal in the race to succeed President Jacques Chirac as bickering within the governing party mounted.

Sarkozy, head of the Union for a Popular Movement, would get 36 percent of votes if the first of the two-round ballot set for April and May were to take place now, a TNS-Sofres/Unilog poll for LCI, RTL and Le Figaro showed today, 2 points less than a week earlier. Royal gained 4.5 points to 34 percent and would defeat Sarkozy 51 percent to 49 percent in the runoff.
