Amid calls by Libyan rebels for more airstrikes by the international coalition seeking to weaken Moammar Gadhafi’s grip on power, Conservative Leader Stephen Harper says Canada is standing pat. “We’ll continue to discuss this with allies,” Harper said Friday on the campaign trail in Thornhill.
“But we’ve been clear we’re not putting Canadian soldiers on the ground, and in terms of any requests for additional participation, we will not make those kinds of commitments during an election campaign.”
The Western alliance is struggling to overcome differences over the Libya mission, with Britain and France also seeking more strikes by other NATO nations, particularly the U.S.
