Turkey: Possible Turkish Arms Buy from Russia Troubles NATO, US - by Michael Friedson

Although there are many security experts in a number of Western capitals who don’t believe a major arms sale by Russia to Turkey will ever materialize, whether it’s more message or not, it’s troubling.

The message is the ongoing negotiations for Ankara to buy sophisticated weapons including the S-400 air defense system from the Russians – a stark missive telling NATO, the United States and anyone else concerned that there are other sources of weapons available to Turkey besides NATO countries.

The reaction by the US military was a tepid and unconvincing comment from the Pentagon suggesting “it’s a good idea” for NATO allies to buy equipment that usable by all of its members, according to the French news agency AFP. Meanwhile, for the moment, Turkey and Russia are both seen as wanting to be seen at the negotiating table rather than unloading arms shipments
