Islam and Liberals: Maher to Ayaan Hirsi Ali: Why Do Liberals ‘Blame the Victim’ When It Comes to Islam?

Bill Maher spoke with Ayaan Hirsi Ali last night about a recurring topic of his, radical Islam, and spent quite a lot talking about liberal reactions to it.

Maher brought up how liberals have targeted Hirsi Ali and may have also had the Muhammad cartoon contest on the brain when he asked why so many liberals, who normally “hate blaming the victim,” do so when it comes to radical Islam.Hirsi Ali said she’s not sure why liberals do that, and Maher argued that liberals also try to justify so much in a culture that’s decidedly illiberal.

Maher alluded to liberals he “used to respect” who keep arguing with him on this issue, rebutting the suggestion that there are other Muslim nations which are basically “bastions of freedom and democracy.”

He told Hirsi Ali that liberals just don’t understand that the position the two of them are taking is the liberal one. Hirsi Ali agreed that what radical Muslims do is an “assault on liberalism.”

Hirsi Ali, atheism and Islam - by Spengler

Why do Muslim apostates gravitate towards atheism? That is not true of other religions. Many Jewish converts achieved prominence in 20th-century Christianity - for example, the recently deceased Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, the martyred Carmelite nun Edith Stein (now canonized), and the great Protestant theologian Eugene Rosenstock-Huessy. But the name of no prominent Muslim convert to Christianity (much less to Judaism) comes to mind.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: hero or phony? - Controversial Politician says Thanks But No Thanks to stay in Denmark

"Persecuted" Politician and author Ayaan Hirsi Ali said she was ‘touched and honoured’ by Denmark’s offer of protected residence but is choosing to stay in the United States. On Sunday, the culture minister, Brian Mikkelsen, said Denmark would give the 37-year-old Dutch-Ethiopian author Ayaan Hirsi Ali asylum. The offer was made under the provisions established by the International City of Refuge Network, where ‘free cities’ are established for writers whose lives have been threatened because of their publications. Ali told Jyllands-Posten newspaper in an interview that it made more sense for her to remain in the United States. In a speech to Europe’s Liberal Democrats (ELDR) congress A Liberal Europe for a Free World, to which network Hirsi Ali’s political party VVD belongs, the Danish PM Mr. Rasmussen insisted on the liberal democracies’ obligation to protect persecuted writers like Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Note EU-Digest: Ms. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is not Ethiopian as is reported in Denmark and by the US Conservative sources but Somali-born. Earlier the Dutch news program Zembla also disclosed she had told a variety of lies about her past in order to get asylum in the Netherlands in 1992. Zembla retraced Hirsi Ali's journey from Somalia, via Kenya, to the Netherlands and uncovered both well-documented and previously unreported inconsistencies in her story. Interviews with her brother, aunt and ex-husband raised doubts about Hirsi Ali's contention she fled to Europe to escape possible retribution from her family for not going through with an arranged marriage. Her relatives contradicted her claim that she was not present during the wedding to the Canadian-Somali man. Hirsi Ali said she was forced to marry a stranger but her ex-husband said they had been in love and spent the week together after the wedding. He then went back to Canada to prepare for her arrival. Supplied with a plane ticket, Hirsi Ali later arrived in Germany and took a train to Amsterdam rather than continue the planned journey to Canada. The program-makers said it was decided to look into her past because of differing accounts she has given over the years about her past. Hirsi Ali said she came clean about the lies she told to get asylum when she joined the Conservative Dutch Liberal Party (VVD) in 2002. Yet prominent VVDer (and now EU Commissioner) Neelie Kroes described Hirsi Ali as a person who had lived through five civil wars in Somalia. This was not true as Hirsi Ali lived in Kenya for over 10 years before coming to the Netherlands. Insiders consider Ms Hirsi Ali a "very intelligent manipulating opportunist" and it seems even the PM of Denmark has become entangled in this controversy.

Netherlands: "Strange bedfellows" - Why Is The Netherlands' Terrorists Favorite Lawyer, Britta Böhler, Representing Ayaan Hirsi Ali now?

Now that American Enterprise Institute scholar Ayaan Hirsi Ali has returned to the Netherlands, searching for sufficient funding to cover her prodigious “security" detail [estimated to cost upwards of $2 million per year], an extremely troubling relationship comes into clearer focus; Ali is represented by Britta Böhler, a naturalized citizen of Holland and a notorious defense attorney for European Marxist and Islamist terrorists.Born in Germany, Böhler was an early devotee of Marx and Lenin as a student and a supporter of the Red Army Faction, a German terrorist group. As an attorney, Böhler’s vigorous defense of terrorists and left-wing activism has brought her acclaim within both revolutionary and radical Islamist circles.

"She also happens to be a great admirer of Abdullah Öcalan, a Turkish-Kurdish macho with a preference for blond European women and the leader of the PKK, an extremely violent Kurdish terrorist network which specializes in liquidating opponents. In Ocalan’s terrorist camps, there were a few German women who previously belonged to, or sympathized with the Baader-Meinhof gang. When Turkey finally captured Ocalan, Britta Böhler simply announced she was his lawyer. Just before Ocalan was captured, Böhler tried to arrange his flight to the Netherlands, but the Dutch authorities did not give Ocalan’s plane permission to land - for reasons of State security. Böhler was upset, claiming that Ocalan’s “right to asylum" had been ignored. Böhler and her associates have also played a legal role - as attorneys - in virtually every major terrorism court case in the Netherlands." as reported by Emerson Vermaat, in Front Page Magazine.

Europe against 'paying bill' for US financial turmoil

The Dutch Justice Minister said Thursday the Netherlands is no longer willing to pay the costs - estimated at €2 million (US$2.8 million) per year - to protect former lawmaker Ayaan Hirsi Ali while she lives in the United States. Hirsi Ali, 37, threatened with death for her anti-Islam writings, returned abruptly to the Netherlands on Monday after a year's stay in the US, where her autobiography, "Infidel," has become a best-seller. "When Ms. Hirsi Ali is in the Netherlands, protection measures will be taken for her on the basis of recent threat evaluations," Ernst Hirsch Ballin wrote in a letter to parliament, responding to formal questions by lawmakers asking the details surrounding her return.

Note EU-Digest: The Netherlands should not have paid for the protection of Ms Ali in the first place.
