EU-France: Macron reshuffles his Cabinet after months of turmoil in his second term

After weeks of speculation that he might change prime minister, the 45-year-old head of state said on Monday that he was sticking with under-fire Elisabeth Borne.

Since his re-election last May, Macron has faced months of fierce street protests over a deeply unpopular pensions reform and was forced into crisis management again late last month when riots erupted nationwide.

Advisors and ministers had long argued over whether the centrist should carry out a major overhaul of the cabinet to signal a fresh start, but in the end the reshuffle was limited in scope.

USA: - Poll : Most Voters Say Biden’s Cabinet Nominees Deserve Up-or-Down Senate Vote

The nomination of Neera Tanden to be President Joe Biden’s director of the Office of Management and Budget appears to be in trouble, but most voters still believe the president’s nominees for office deserve an up or down vote on the Senate floor.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 58% of Likely U.S. Voters say every person the president nominates to serve as a judge or in a government position should receive an up or down vote on the floor of the Senate. Only 21% disagree, while another 21% say they’re not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

USA: Joe Biden’s drive for diversity in top political jobs is only an illusion of change - by Nesrine Malik

Joe Biden, you may have heard, is hiring a lot of women. During his campaign, he promised to appoint the most diverse cabinet in American history. So far, he has hired an all-female communications team and lined up several other women for senior jobs, some of which have never been filled by a woman before. As with the selection of his vice-president, Kamala Harris, the reception has been rapturous. What better way to fumigate Trumpism than by filling the executive with qualified women in senior positions? “There goes the old boys’ club,” says NBC. An article in the Washington Post lists four reasons why Biden’s cabinet should be 50% women: he owes it to them; it looks bad when other countries such as Finland and South Africa have got there first; qualified women are easy to find; and finally, it’s just about damn time.

Behind the scenes, there is pressure on Biden to make good on racial diversity and appoint more people of colour in general. Some Democratic members of Congress have called for at least five more Latinos to be appointed to senior cabinet positions. Asian American and Pacific Islander lawmakers have written that it will be “deeply disappointing if several AAPIs are not nominated”. Like victors dividing the spoils of war, a diverse array of Americans is scrambling to stake a claim in the new administration.

The Netherlands: Going Dutch; Netherlands Pains To Find New Government And Might Embrace Christian Traditionalists - by Marcel Michelson

More than three months after indecisive parliamentary elections, Dutch political parties are still at loggerheads to find a government with majority backing in parliament.

Following several permutations, and excluding the ultra-right PVV party of populist Geert Wilders, the next government looks set to become a centre-right coalition with the CHU Christian traditionalists. Perhaps it is wise to name a neutral cabinet instead.

While some people in Britain and France would like to see a more proportional electoral system like in the Netherlands, the Dutch elections resulted in a myriad of 13 elected parties splitting 150 seats out of 28 parties that participated.

The VVD liberals of Prime Minister Mark Rutte lost five percent points of the votes but remained the biggest party with 33 seats, ahead of the PVV that obtained 20 seats, Christian CDA at 19, centrist D66 also at 19 and Green Left at 14 seats, a gain of 10. SP also had 14 seats.

Greece PM Tsipras reshuffles government after rebellion

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has made changes to his government, removing ministers who voted against reforms necessary for a rescue deal. Nine changes were made overall.

The reshuffle on Friday came two days after a rebellion in Tsipras' left-wing Syriza party forced him to rely on opposition votes to pass a reform package in return for talks on a third international bailout for his debt-stricken country.

Tsipras replaced Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, one of the rebels, with former Labor Minister Panos Skourletis, whose position will be taken by George Katrougalos, formerly Administrative Reforms Minister.
Skourletis is a close ally of Tsipras.

The deputy minister of defense, who was close to Lafazanis, was also removed from the post, to be replaced by Christoforos Vernardakis, an academic.

The prime minister also named Trifon Alexiadis deputy finance minister, replacing Nadia Valavani, who stepped down ahead of the vote earlier this week.

The crucial portfolio of finance minister will be kept by Euclid Tsakalotos, who took over the position on July 6 after the former holder, Yanis Varoufakis, resigned.

The new members of the cabinet are scheduled to be sworn in on Saturday.

France: French government collapses after row over economic policy

France has been thrown into fresh crisis today after President Francois Hollande asked his prime minister to form a new government.

The president ordered Prime Minister Manuel Valls to form a new cabinet “consistent with the direction he has set for the country,” the presidency said in a statement.

It did not give any reasons, but the move comes after Economy Minister Arnaud Montebourg spent his weekend bad-mouthing the country’s economic direction and ally Germany in a much-criticised show of insubordination.

The Local reports that Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls had been under pressure after Montebourg and Education Minister Benoit Hamon separately criticised the government’s obsession with reducing deficit instead of pursuing policies to encourage growth.

While Valls himself has not reacted, his entourage said yesterday that Montebourg had crossed a line. It is expected that the new government will be named tomorrow.
