France - Coronavirus Pandemic: : Paris region and beyond to begin month-long limited lockdown today Friday
French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced Thursday a month-long limited lockdown for Paris and other regions of the country starting Friday as the number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units spikes. Schools and essential shops, including bookstores, will remain open.

The Netherlands: As coronavirus cases rise, Paris, Madrid and Ibiza are added to Dutch 'no go list'
The Netherlands has placed Paris, Ibiza, Madrid and Brussels on its code orange list of places where all but essential travel is advised against, because of the increase in coronavirus cases.
The French, Spanish and Belgian capitals have been added to the orange list, as have the Balearic islands (include Majorca and Ibiza), and the Spanish provinces of Burgos, Salamanca, Almeria and Navarra.
The French Bouches-du-Rhone region, close to Aix en Provence and Marseille, is also out of bounds.
The ministry says all but essential travel to these places should be avoided and anyone returning to the Netherlands from one of them should go in to quarantine for 14 days. Britain has also been added to the code orange list, but travellers will not have to quarantine on their return to the Netherlands.
Travel advice to the UK has been tightened up as a warning, because the British have introduced quarantine requirements for people from the Netherlands, the foreign ministry said.

France - Paris: Historic Notre Dame goes up in flames: Huge fire underway at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

Smoke could be seen billowing out from the top of the medieval cathedral, as flames leapt out beside its two bell towers.
French fire services said they are "not sure" if the fire can be stopped, according to AFP.
Both the spire and roof of the cathedral have now collapsed.
Footage from the scene showed flames inside one of the building's two towers.
Notre Dame Cathedral is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and is perhaps the most famous church in the world. It is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Paris and work was begun in 1163 and completed in 1345. During the French Revolution, the cathedral was rededicated to the Cult of Reason, and then to the Cult of the Supreme Being and many of the treasures of the cathedral were either destroyed or plundered

France: A million take to Paris streets for Johnny Hallyday's funeral - by Kim Willsher
To the blast of electric guitars, the revving of Harley-Davidsons, applause and tears, France bade an emotional farewell to Johnny Hallyday, France’s rock and roll “national hero” on Saturday.
The centre of Paris ground to a halt as the wave of national grief that has overwhelmed the country since news of the death of the singer, known as the French Elvis, at the age of 74 broke early on Wednesday morning.
In scenes resonant of the mass mourning in Britain following the death of Princess Diana, police said a million fans had lined the route of the funeral procession, which was accompanied by Hallyday’s band playing live, as it made its way from the Arc de Triomphe along the Champs-Élysées to Place de la Concorde and on to the church of La Madeleine.
Hallyday’s widow, Laeticia, and their two adopted children Jade, 13, and Joy, nine, followed the cortege. Fans, many in tears, threw flowers at the hearse.
Hallyday’s older children, David Hallyday and Laura Smet, waited on the steps of the church to receive the coffin.
A visibly emotional Emmanuel Macron, a Hallyday fan who had called for a “people’s tribute” to the singer, told the crowds: “You are here for him, for Johnny Hallyday. After 60 years of career, 1,000 songs, 50 albums … you are still there, still there, always there. I know you’re waiting for him to jump out from somewhere, he’s on a bike, he comes towards you and starts the first song and you start singing with him.”
As the crowd cheered, whistled and shouted “Johnny, Johnny”, he continued: “Yes, this December Saturday is sad, but you have to be here for Johnny because from the beginning Johnny was there for you. In moments of your life one of his songs translated something you had in your heart … an indefinable humanity that made us feel less alone. That’s how Johnny came into our lives … he became a necessary presence, a friend, a brother.”

France: Emmanuel Macron: Man charged with plotting to kill French president
A suspected far-right extremist has
been charged with plotting to kill French President Emmanuel Macron at
the Bastille Day parade later this month.
He also said he wanted to attack minorities, a judicial source told AFP.
Mr Macron has been giving a state-of-the-nation-style address in Versailles.

U.S. President Donald Trump may be planning to visit U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May on short notice, the Guardian reported Monday.
Trump could use his next European trip to stop by his Scottish golf resort in Turnberry and would be expected to meet May for informal talks in London if so. Downing Street is preparing for a potential visit from the president between the G20 in Hamburg this weekend and his appearance at the Bastille Day parade in Paris on July 14 alongside French President Emmanuel Macron.
No. 10 would likely be informed only 24 hours ahead of time
in order to minimize the risk of disruption, according to the Guardian.
The formal state visit — announced during May’s trip to Washington in January — was expected to take place this summer but postponed over concerns of mass protests.

of the country are the most affected.
Authorities have tried to quell all talk of any fuel shortages, but 2,400 petrol stations out of 12,000 petrol stations around the country - that's one fifth - had either run out of fuel or were running very low.
French oil giant Total said 54 percent of its stations in Brittany, 46 percent in Normandy, and 43 percent in the Pays-de-la-Loire region are totally or partially out of fuel.
In Nantes it’s proving almost impossible to find fuel. Posters announcing that pumps are empty greet motorists at almost every station. It’s a similar case in Vannes, where almost all stations are out of fuel.

Pollution: Dirty deeds: The world's biggest polluters by country - by Sarah Wolfe
After years of decline, US carbon dioxide emissions increased slightly last year, according to a new report by the US Energy Information Administration.
That said, America is still a little better than the world's worst polluter: China.
The 2 percent jump in CO2 emissions in the United
States was largely the result of higher natural gas prices last year,
which prompted some utilities to switch back to a dirtier energy source —
coal, according to The Washington Post.

France crafted an unprecedented deal to slow global warming by
cutting and then eliminating greenhouse gas pollution, urging climate
negotiators from nearly 200 nations to adopt it Saturday.
In the "Paris agreement," countries would commit to keeping average global temperatures from rising another degree Celsius (1.8 Fahrenheit) between now and 2100, a key demand of poor countries ravaged by rising sea levels and other effects of climate change. But the pact doesn't have any mechanism to punish countries that don't or can't contribute toward that goal.
Countries would also commit to limiting the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by human activity to the same levels that trees, soil and oceans can absorb naturally, beginning at some point between 2050 and 2100.
In practical terms, achieving that goal means the world would have to stop emitting greenhouse gases altogether in the next half-century, scientists said. That's because the less we pollute, the less pollution nature absorbs.
Achieving such a reduction in emissions would involve a complete transformation of how people get energy.
Negotiators had a few hours to analyze the draft before going into a plenary meeting for possible adoption. French President Francois Hollande, who joined the meeting Saturday to add weight to the negotiations, urged them to approve it.
"The decisive agreement for the planet is here and now," Hollande said. "France calls upon you to adopt the first universal agreement on climate."
The deal, meant to take effect in 2020, would be the first to ask all countries to join the fight against global warming, representing a sea change in the U.N. talks, which previously required only wealthy nations to reduce their emissions.

“The U.K. has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech,” the petition explains. “The same principles should apply to everyone who wishes to enter the U.K. If the United Kingdom is to continue applying the ‘unacceptable behavior’ criteria to those who wish to enter its borders, it must be fairly applied to the rich as well as poor, and the weak as well as powerful.”
“The only reason I wouldn’t go to some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump,” London Mayor Boris Johnson said.
Neighborhoods in Paris and London are so dangerous that police refuse to go there, Donald Trump said Tuesday as he defended his plan for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.”
Despite a barrage of criticism for his comments on Muslims on Monday, Trump stuck to his guns, telling talk show hosts that he wanted to stop the U.S. having “radicalized” no-go areas like in European capitals.
“They have areas in Paris where it is so radicalized and so vicious … that the police refuse to go there. They will not go there. That’s what’s going to happen with our country.”
He was no more polite about London, telling MSNBC’s Morning Joe that “London and other places … are so radicalized that the police are afraid for their own lives.”

Representatives from more than 150 countries have started their ambitious attempt to bring down the earth’s rising temperatures.
The climate change conference in Paris, COP 21, will seek to steer global economies towards greener fuels instead of fossil fuels.
Opening the summit, French President Francois Hollande said the fight against terrorism and global warming are closely linked.
He also reiterated that a deal to try and keep any further rises in global temperatures to below 2 degrees Celsius needed to be “universal, differentiated and binding”, with richer countries contributing more than poorer ones.

ISIS: Hacker Group Anonymous Announces 'Biggest Operation' Against ISIS After Paris Attacks
The Hacker group Anonymous declared "total war" on the Islamic State
(ISIS) extremist group on Sunday following the wave of attacks in Paris
that killed at least 129 people and left dozens more in a critical
condition.
A masked, French-speaking figure with a distorted voice is shown reading a statement from the group in the two-minute-long YouTube video. Clips from the attacks in Paris are shown in the video.
"War is declared. Get prepared," the masked figure says in the video in reference to ISIS. "The French people are stronger than you and will come out of this atrocity even stronger. Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down. You should know that we will find you and we will not let you go. We will launch the biggest operation ever against you."
The escalation in Anonymous's operation against ISIS comes after at least seven suspected attackers carried out gun and bomb attacks against a number of civilian targets across the French capital, leaving 352 wounded and at least 99 in a critical condition. French police are continuing a manhunt for a man they believe took part in the attacks, identified as 26-year-old Salah Abdeslam.
Anonymous has targeted ISIS for a number of months, revealing the Twitter accounts of ISIS members and hacking a number of the group's sites. U.S. magazine Foreign Policy estimates that the group has dismantled at least 149 of the extremist group's affiliated websites, flagged approximately 101,000 Twitter accounts and nearly 6,000 propaganda videos.

France will mull invoking NATO's collective defense clause, French
security expert Bruno Tertrais tells DW. He also said that Paris-style
attacks could happen in every major Western city.
Bruno Tertrais: It does not really come as a surprise. All the intelligence services and police knew that a major attack of the kind we had yesterday was not only possible, but almost likely. It is the kind of attack that police has tried to prevent for several years now, but it was absolutely not a surprise. Of course, it was a huge shock, especially because of the simultaneous nature of the attacks and the fact that for the first time ever, we had suicide bombers operating on the national territory.
