Morocco Ukraine relations: Morocco sending tanks to Ukraine - first African country to do so

This week, Morocco made a move that seemed to indicate increasing warmth toward Europe.

Morocco became the first African country to send heavy weapons to Ukraine. The country is delivering 20 renovated T-72B main battle tanks to the eastern European country.

The move is a significant change from Morocco's previously neutral stance on the Russia invasion of Ukraine as well as a clear turn towards Europe and the US. In the March 2022 vote at the United Nations that rejected Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Morocco and other African nations abstained.

According to an article by the Algerian news outlet, MENA Defense, Morocco had already agreed to send the tanks to Ukraine in April last year during a meeting at the German military base Ramstein. In return, the US had apparently promised to provide financial and military support.

EU: Defence Force: Inside Nato, an EU army of the willing is forming - by Ingeborg Eliassen

A thundering roar splits the air above the snowy plain. For a few seconds, the profile of an F35 fighter jet is visible under the thick clouds. Then it is gone. In this Nato exercise in eastern Norway, the US-made combat aircraft is the only visible American element. The soldiers on the armoured vehicles of a fictitious attacker, and the fighters that lie in sniper positions in the bushes to stop them come from France, Poland and Spain. Are they the beginning of an EU army?

Norway is the neighbour that Russia has never occupied or been at war with. Hoping to keep it that way, every other year, the Norwegian Armed Forces invite its Nato allies to come and test their ability to help defend the country against unnamed external enemies in biting winds, freezing temperatures and snow. This year, over 30,000 troops from 27 countries are participating in the exercise, named ‘Cold Response’, bringing with them battle tanks, helicopters, attack airplanes and warships.

This exercise has happened many times before. But this year is different. Not least for the Polish contingent. The artificial theatre of war in Norway mirrors a deadly real ‘theatre of war’, as military people call it, in their neighbouring country, Ukraine.

This also explains why this year’s exercise needed two buses to transport all the visiting journalists and their cameras to the display of Nato force at Rena, a remote valley in the eastern Norwegian pine forests.

Both the Norwegian government and the Nato top brass could not seem to reiterate it enough: this exercise is not a threat to anybody. As Dutch admiral Rob Bauer said when he greeted the reporters who had come to watch the war games of French, Spanish, Polish and Norwegian troops, “this exercise is not directed against any specific country or region.” In fact, it has been planned for two years, and “all OSCE members were invited to send observers”, Bauer said.

Russian Invasion of Ukriane: Russia says Moskva cruiser has sunk after reported Ukrainian missile strike - by P.Sauer, J.Borger and J. Elgot

Russia’s flagship missile cruiser Moskva has sunk in “stormy seas” while being towed to a port in the Black Sea following an explosion, the Russian defence ministry has announced. The Ukrainian southern military command claimed late on Wednesday to have struck the Moskva with Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles, while distracting its crew with an aerial drone, causing it to start sinking and forcing the crew to abandon ship.
Russia’s defence ministry initially denied reports that it had sunk and claimed the fires had been extinguished. Four Russian ships that had gone to the Moskva’s rescue were being hampered by stormy

But late on Thursday, the ministry said in a statement: “The cruiser ship Moskva lost its stability when it was towed to the port because of the damage to the ship’s hull that it received during the fire from the detonation of ammunition. In stormy sea conditions, the ship sank.”

Russian Genocide continues: Mariupol's dead put at 5,000 as Ukraine braces in the east

The mayor of the besieged port city of Mariupol put the number of civilians killed there at more than 5,000 Wednesday, as Ukraine collected evidence of Russian atrocities on the ruined outskirts of Kyiv and braced for what could become a climactic battle for control of the country’s industrial east.

Ukrainian authorities continued gathering up the dead in shattered towns outside the capital amid telltale signs Moscow’s troops killed civilians indiscriminately before retreating over the past several days.

In other developments, the U.S. and its Western allies moved to impose new sanctions against the Kremlin over what they branded war crimes.

Russian Invasion Ukraine: Dozens killed in Kramatorsk train station after Russian rocket attack.

A rocket attack on a railway station in the eastern Ukrainian town of Kramatorsk killed dozens of people on Friday as civilians rushed to leave the Donbas region, which is in the crosshairs of the Russian military.

The remains of a large rocket bearing the inscription "for our children" in Russian lay just outside the main building.

Suitcases, stuffed animals and bags were strewn around the station and on the platform, dotted with human remains.

The Russian defence ministry said suggestions that it had carried out the attack were "absolutely false".

Intensive shelling has already begun to devastate towns in the region, and officials have pleaded with civilians to flee, but the intensity of the fighting is preventing this, as the Russion genocide continues.
