The European Commission continues controversial enlargement plans on Wednesday – offering Macedonia official candidate status for EU membership.
The country was on the verge of civil war four years ago and many have questioned its preparedness for entry.
While the recommendation does not mean the former Yugoslav republic will automatically begin talks, it is a step towards eventual membership.
The commission statement avoids mention of a start date for negotiations.
A draft of the report - seen by journalists - hails Macedonia’s power-sharing executive and calls for “continued and effective implementation” of the agreement with the EU."
