ECB alerts eurozone to more rate rises by Ralph Atkins in Frankfurt
Jean-Claude Trichet, European Central Bank president, has signalled clearly that further interest rate increases are likely to follow a quarter percentage point rise to 2.5 per cent announced on Thursday, warning of inflationary dangers ahead.
Interest rates could rise another quarter percentage point in June, or even May, economists said after Mr Trichet emphasised that “upward risks to price stability prevail”. Monetary policy remained “stimulative” with borrowing costs still “at very low levels”.
