EU may relax Palestine aid restrictions - by Helena Spongenberg
The European Union may ease its economic embargo on the Hamas-led Palestinian coalition government if steps are taken toward resuming peace talks with Israel, a Palestinian political advisor has said. Ahmad Yousef, political advisor to the Palestinian prime minister, Ismail Haniyya, said that European countries have hinted that they intend to lift the economic embargo on the Islamist Hamas-led Palestinian government once a national unity government is established.
"European countries have promised to reconsider their position regarding the boycott of the Palestinian Authority", Mr Yousef stated. "After the war in Lebanon, Europe realised that it should present a more balanced position regarding the Israeli-Arab conflict", he said in an interview with Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
