Competition for Air Force Tanker Contract Fraught with Politics
"Northrop Grumman, partnering with the European firm that owns Airbus, is looking to take advantage of an opening provided by Boeing missteps over the last few years.Northrop Grumman has made clear its intention of bidding on the tanker deal in partnership with the European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. (EADS). Northrop Grumman would act as the prime contractor, using the EADS Airbus A-330 as its basic platform and then militarizing it to meet the Air Force's specifications.
In the intensely political world of big-ticket U.S. defense contracting, the aerial tanker almost could serve as the poster child for politically loaded transactions. Still, Northrop Grumman is expressing at least the hope that the Air Force will choose a new aerial refueling tanker based foremost upon the merits of the entrants, rather than the nationality of the companies competing".
