European Union to probe surging imports of Chinese flavour enhancer MSG
The European Union said Wednesday it would investigate whether China is dumping imports of the flavour enhancer MSG on European markets below cost. The investigation could pave the way for tariffs that would increase the price of the product. MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is added to soups, stocks, potato chips, instant noodles and other foods, adding a savoury taste.
The EU said it would investigate after Europe's sole producer of MSG, the French subsidiary of Japan's Ajinomoto Co. Inc., complained in July that surging imports of MSG from China had sent prices tumbling and cut into market share, according to a notice published in the EU's Official Journal.
