Buckle Up For Obama, Europe - by Lionel Laurent
Obama is, on the surface, a friendly force of good for the European Union. He lacks the unilateral, brash cowboy tactics of George W. Bush and the neocons; he has also promised to make jaw-jaw, rather than war-war, a top priority. But there is a chance that Obama might turn out to be a dangerous threat to Europe economically, if not politically, if he decides to turn his back on free trade and give America a helping hand directly. Most economists were optimistic on Wednesday that Obama would not fall into the trap of chasing populism over pragmatism, but that might not rule out future sticking points between the U.S. and Europe
