Faith in Italy's budget intact despite political crisis - James Mackenzie

Italy may be facing the prospect of early elections following a breakdown in its ruling centre-right coalition but that is unlikely to rattle financial markets unless the drama threatens to undermine fiscal stability.

After the stormiest month in Italian politics since his centre-right coalition won power two years ago, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi looks set to call a confidence vote next month and has threatened to resign if he fails to win the support of his fractured coalition.


Markets, however, appear unfazed, confident that the political turmoil will not jeopardise the relatively conservative fiscal stance that has helped Italy ride out the euro zone debt crisis so far.
