Climate Change - India : 'Climate change may spell disaster for coastal economy' - by Prabhu Chawla

Climate change has the potential to gravely damage the coastal economy of the Kerala, said B Madhusoodana Kurup, vice chancellor of the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS). Speaking to the Express on the sidelines of the foundation day celebration of KUFOS, the VC pointed out that people who depend solely on aquatic resources for their livelihood are facing a serious threat.

“Climate change results from the gradual increase of sea surface temperature. Since fishes are cold blooded  species, they cannot adjust to the increase in the surface temperature. There will be huge abnormalities in spawning time. Pelagic fishes like mackerel, sardine, etc which are largely found in the Kerala coast will be badly affected. These species will be forced to migrate. This can have serious impact on the livelihood of the coastal fish workers”, he explained. The senior scholar also pointed that uncontrolled release of carbon can badly damage the absorption capacity of ocean.

“The sea acts as the regulatory agency for carbon.  But unregulated emission of carbon can be highly problematic. Statistics in Kerala coast tell us that things are in bad shape”, he said, adding that climate change also make sea water acidic. “This can upset the biological clock of different species”, he said.
