The self-employed, known as ZZP'ers in Dutch, now account for 10% of the working population, according to the national statistics office CBS.
A further 16% are on a short-term or flexible contract, the CBS says. This means over one quarter of the working population does not have a traditional, permanent employment contract. In 2002, 17% of workers were on flexible contracts or were freelancers.
