At Least 40% of the Dutch veal and 13 percent of the beef which are offered for consumption in Dutch supermarkets and meat stores is infected with the ESBL bacteria. This alarming announcement came from a report by the Dutch Consumer Association which was commissioned by the Netherlands Ministry Of Economic Affairs.
The ESBL bacteria makes a person or animal infected by it resistant to a variety of antibiotics. This can cause major problems in the fight against infectious diseases which require the use of antibiotics.
No details were provided as to ESBL bacteria in porc, lamb, and poultry products.
The ESBl bacteria develops as a result of the over usage of antibiotics in the cattle, sheep and poultry industry. The ESBL bacteria is not limited only to the Netherlands but is known to be widely prevalent throughout the EU, the US and other countries of the world.
