A senior European Union official has criticized Turkish police's harsh crackdown on protesters, telling an audience Friday in Istanbul — including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan — that a "swift and transparent" investigation was needed.
Three people have died and at least 2,000 have been injured in brutal police crackdowns.
Stefan Fule, the EU enlargement commissioner, said people have the right to peaceful demonstrations in democratic societies. There was no place for police brutality in democracies, Fule said.
To his critics, Erdogan the leader of the Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) is seen as increasingly authoritarian, and presiding over what many secular-minded Turks fear is a creeping conservative social agenda.
