On 5 May 1821, Napoleon Bonaparte died in a surprisingly small bed surrounded by his French coterie in exile in a damp and reportedly rat-infested house on the British island of Saint Helena.
His last words, uttered shortly before he expired around 5.59pm local time were relayed back: “La France, l’armée, tête d’armée, Joséphine …” (France, the army, head of the army, Joséphine). He was 51.

USA - March on Washington Thousands gather in D.C. to commemorate historic March on Washington
After a week of protests and outrage over the police shooting
of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin, thousands gathered in Washington on Friday
to commemorate the historic 1963 March on the U.S. capital.
Civil rights leaders and advocates convened near the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his historic "I Have A Dream" address, a vision of racial equality that remains elusive for millions of Americans.
The event, organized by Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network under the title Commitment March: Get Your Knee Off Our Necks in recognition of George Floyd, a Black man who died May 25 after a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minn., held a knee to his neck for nearly eight minutes. Floyd's death sparked weeks of sustained protests and unrest across the country.

Hungary: Merkel meets Orban in Hungary to commemorate ′Pan-European Picnic′
German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor
Orban on Monday as part of the 'Pan-European Picnic' anniversary.
The symbolic event 30 years ago was a show of support for a united Europe that led to the first exodus from behind the Iron Curtain.
"The picnic was the biggest mass exodus from the GDR since the construction of the wall in 1961. The picnic turned into a world event and reflected the values of "solidarity, freedom and a humane Europe," Merkel said, thanking Hungary for playing its part in opening the borders.
Merkel and her Hungarian counterpart attended a service at the Protestant church in Sopron, a city near Hungary's border with Austria, where hundreds of East Germans took advantage of the picnic and fled West.
"Sopron is an example of how much we Europeans can achieve, if we courageously stand up for our indivisible values," the German Chancellor added.

While the U.S. contends with the destruction caused by two
ferocious hurricanes in three weeks, Americans also are marking the
anniversary of one of the nation's most scarring days.
Thousands of 9/11 victims' relatives, survivors, rescuers and others
are expected to gather Monday at the World Trade Center to remember the
deadliest terror attack on American soil.
Sixteen years later, the quiet rhythms of commemoration have become customs: a recitation of all the names of the dead, moments of silence and tolling bells, and two powerful light beams that shine through the night.
Yet each ceremony also takes on personal touches.

World War One: Battle of Verdun: Hollande and Merkel remember WWI dead 100 years after Verdun Battle

The Verdun battle was one of the longest in World War I, lasting more than 300 days from February to December 1916, and its commemoration has come to signify the reconciliation between Germany and France after decades of hostility and distrust following two world wars.
“We are side by side to tackle the challenges of today and first of all the future of Europe, because, as we know disappointment was followed by disenchantment, and after doubts came suspicion, and for some even rejection or break-up,” Hollande said in a closing speech at the ceremony.
It was not until 1984 that the neighbours carried out a joint ceremony to mark the Verdun battle, another step towards ending decades of residual hostility.

Europe - D-Day Commemoration and diplomacy: Putin, Poroshenko call for end to Ukraine violence

The D-Day meeting marked the first time the two leaders met since Poroshenko was elected president of Ukraine, which remains restive after the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
The two leaders talked for a quarter of an hour in a meeting hosted by French President François Hollande.
“The conversation took place on possible measures to de-escalate (the crisis) including how Moscow could recognise the election of Poroshenko. The details of a ceasefire will also be discussed in coming days,” the official in French President Hollande’s office said, adding that they also discussed the economic consequences of the stand-off.
The AFP reported that the first meeting between the two leaders took place informally after the many world leaders gathering for the commemoration posed for a group photo. After the photo, most of the leaders walked into a nearby building for a lunch. But Putin, Poroshenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel stayed outside the door and chatted together.
Reporters observing the encounter couldn’t hear the conversation. The animated conversation lasted about a minute.
