EU - Frontex: Thousands apply for EU border guard posts
Some 7,500 applicants had applied for the 700 positions, which is part of a much larger bid to create a standing corps of 10,000 guards under the agency's aegis over the next several years.
"For the first time, and this is also new, and we are also making preparations for that, for the first time, Frontex staff will put on European Union uniforms, not to represent their nations, but to represent the entire European Union," Fabrice Leggeri, the head of the Warsaw-based agency, told reporters on Friday (17 January).
Many applicants appear to be retired military personnel, seeking a possible second career complete with generous EU salaries and perks.
Leggeri said the agency had expanded the scope of potential applicants in order not to deplete existing national border guard agencies.
Once recruited, the 700 will still have to undergo a six-month training exercise before being deployed in the field at the EU's external borders early next year.
Although most appear to come from what Leggeri described as "new" and southern EU states, he also noted some had applied from Nordic EU countries.
Political masters and law makers at the EU institutions, in early 2019, reached an agreement to boost the agency's mandate in the wake of a wider shift to clamp down on the EU's external borders.
That agreement included creating a standing corps of 10,000 guards by 2027 and dovetailed into an agency that primarily saw itself as doing law enforcement work.

Germany says China using LinkedIn to recruit informants - by Nikolaj Nielsen
"This is a broad-based attempt to infiltrate, in particular, parliaments, ministries and government agencies," said BfV head Hans-Georg Maassen on Sunday (10 December).
Maassen said more than 10,000 Germans have been approached by the alleged ruse from Chinese profiles posing as reputable professionals on social networking site LinkedIn.
The BfV released around half dozen fake LinkedIn profiles of young attractive Chinese professionals.
Among them is Laeticia Chen who supposedly works at the China Center for International Politics and Economy. Another, Eva Han, is from the China University of Political Science and Law.

Czech Job Market: Czech ministry mulls massive recruitment of foreign workers to fill jobs
![]() |
| Beautiful and historic Prague, capital of the Czech Republic |
The ministry says the document was presented by ANO’s finance minister Ivan Pilný for the information of other Cabinet ministers with the idea of starting a debate, especially with the ministries most directly concerned such as the foreign ministry, interior ministry, and industry ministry. A spokesman said that the target is to deal with all aspects of the issue of recruiting foreign workers and come up a comprehensive policy. The document was not made public.
Where the workers could come from; what is the time frame for the recruitment; whether new procedures would be adopted; and whether priority would be given to workers qualified for certain sectors are all questions which the ministry does not want to discuss at the moment. The finance ministry spokesman described suggestions that the Czech Republic would once again seek workers from traditional sources of supply, such as Ukraine and Vietnam, as "speculation."
The Czech daily Právo reported that the finance ministry document warns that many Czech companies are losing orders because they can’t find the required workers and that some could even go bust if the situation continues.
Social Democrat election leader and foreign minister Lubomír Zaorálek referred on his Twitter account to a separate interview with the Právo newspaper in which he claimed that the finance ministry report was submitted without the normal prior consultation with other ministries.
Zaorálek added that some of the companies seeking to recruit foreign workers are offering monthly wages of around 13,500 crowns. The Czech minimum wage from the start of 2018 should rise to 12,200 crowns.
September’s Czech unemployment fell to 3.8 percent with almost 285,000 unemployed and 200,000 vacancies at labour offices.
Note EU-Digest: If the Czech Republic requires 200,000 foreign workers to fill vacant positions, they better ease-up on immigration laws and start accepting more refugees based on the established EU quota levels

Daesh weakening: France sees sharp fall in number of citizens joining Islamic State
With Europe's largest Muslim population, France has been a major center for recruitment of would-be jihadis joining Islamic State, with hundreds of people traveling to the region since the group took control of large swathes of Iraq and Syria.
Speaking to security agents at the ministry, Cazeneuve said there had been a "fourfold decrease" with just 18 French people recorded traveling to the area in the first six months of the year compared with 69 in the corresponding period in 2015.
The depletion, he said, was explained by the group's recent losses on the ground but also by France's "enhanced anti-terrorism efforts."

ISIS Foreign Fighters In Syria And Iraq Drop As Islamic State Group Loses Revenue - Michael Kaplan
"Now we have been fighting this enemy for a year, our estimates are down to 200 [per month], and we are actually seeing now an increase in the desertion rates of these fighters," Gersten said. "We are seeing a fracturing in their morale, we are seeing their inability to pay, we are seeing the inability to fight."
The number of foreign fighters crossing into Syria and Iraq has dropped sharply over the past year amid an intense U.S.-led campaign against the Islamic State group, Maj. Gen. Peter Gersten told Pentagon reporters. Whereas about a year ago the group was attracting up to 2,000 foreign fighters each month, these days just a fraction of that number is joining, Agence France-Presse reported him as saying.

Terrorism: Australia warns women IS no 'romantic adventure'
At least 110 Australians have left to fight alongside militants in the Middle East and security officials said between 30 and 40 women were among them or were actively supporting the group in Australia.
"Sadly we are seeing a younger cohort seeking to join the conflict in Syria and Iraq and an increasing number of young females," Bishop said, responding to the high-profile case this week of three British teenage girls heading to Syria.
"This defies logic. Family and friends need to reach out to young people at risk before it's too late."
She cited the case of 22-year-old Amira Karroum who left her Sydney home just before Christmas and died in fighting in Syria. "Her death was not martyrdom, it was a tragic senseless loss," said Bishop.

Spain reports arrest of al Qaeda recruiter suspect
The suspect arrested in the eastern city of Valencia "administered one of the world's most important jihadist forums", dedicated to recruiting and indoctrinating Islamic terrorists, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said.
The name of that forum and the suspect's name were not given, only his initials, M.H.A. He is Jordanian-born with Saudi citizenship.
"He was known within the organization as al Qaeda's librarian," Fernandez Diaz said, without specifying what that term meant in this case.

The Netherlands: Designer clothes improve your chances in landing a job
The researchers tested reactions to well-known brands when judging status and wealth, responding to an invitation to take part in a survey, assessing a potential employee and being asked to give to charity.
In one test, women who wore a well-known brand on their polo shirt were given almost twice as much money when they solicited for charity than when they wore non-designer outfits. In another, wearing branded clothes not only increased a man's chances of being judged suitable for a job, but even increased the salary those surveyed would offer him by 9 per cent.

FT names Europe's definitive best places to work
Today the Financial Times publishes a special report ranking the 50 best workplaces in Europe with Microsoft and Google once again dominating the European and UK leagues. The list has been put together by the Great Place to Work Institute annually since 2003, and is compiled using 15 national best workplaces studies across Europe. The evaluation is based on both employee opinion and a management survey and the report defines a great place to work as “a place where the employees trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do, and enjoy the people they work with.”
