EU-Digest Special Report: Wikipedia-Free And Constantly Updated Global Electronic Encyclopedia

Wikipedia, the first free Global Electronic Encyclopedia is a great tool for writers, journalists, students, businesses, or anyone interested to look up the meaning of a word.

The encyclopedia is written collaboratively by many of its readers over the Internet. In order to achieve this Wikipedia uses a special type of website, called a wiki, that makes collaboration easy. Consequently people all over the world are constantly improving Wikipedia, making thousands of changes an hour, all of which are recorded on article histories and recent changes. Inappropriate changes are usually removed quickly.

Wikipedia is a non-profit corporation based in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA, and organized under the laws of Florida. The founder of Wikipedia is Jimmy Wales who launched the project on June 20, 2003. The goal of the Wikimedia foundation is to bring a free encyclopedia with open content to every single person on the planet. This includes people who currently do not have electricity, computers, internet, or even clean drinking water. All proceeds from donations, as with all proceeds from all their fundraisers, will be fully dedicated to that charitable purpose. In addition to the multilingual general encyclopedia Wikipedia, the Foundation manages a multi-language dictionary and thesaurus named Wiktionary, an encyclopedia of quotations named Wikiquote, a repository of source texts in any language named Wikisource, and a collection of e-book texts for students (such as textbooks and annotated public domain books) named Wikibooks. Wikijunior is a subproject of Wikibooks for children.

Founder Wales believes that the process of collaborative editing has allowed Wikipedia -- which contains more than 1 million entries in more than 75 languages -- to maintain a neutral tone on a wide variety of controversial topics. Wikipedia comes in several languages.

To put Wikipedia on your own browser just go to http://wikipedia.org/ and bookmark it as a toolbar folder.
