İstanbul: The new trendy city for Erasmus students

Named after the great philosopher, theologian, humanist and -- especially -- traveler Erasmus von Rotterdam (1465-1536) the EU program was established in 1987 with the aim of increasing the mobility of European students and therewith to finally bring forward a border crossing cooperation in the field of education.

A real success story is seen when examining Turkey’s Erasmus performance in detail. Compared to 2004, when 1,100 outgoing and 300 incoming Erasmus students were registered in Turkey, today -- in Turkey’s third year of Erasmus participation -- 2,852 Turkish students have left the country to study, with 828 students coming to Turkey. With an annual increase of about 150 percent, Turkey seems to be the new flagship of the EU program.

Today students from nearly all EU countries can be found in İstanbul. Especially high are the numbers of students from Denmark, Germany, Greek, Spain, the UK and Hungary, while from a wide range of subjects the preferred ones are the social and political sciences, engineering and business.
