In name and little else: Tory meets Tory as Harper goes to London - The Globe and Mail

There was a faint effort to evoke the last moment when the Western world was dominated by conservatives, a time when Brian Mulroney and Margaret Thatcher stood beside one another in this same garden, often joined by U.S. president Ronald Reagan and German chancellor Helmut Kohl. But the difference was striking.

Then, the leaders were tightly united in a set of economic and ideological crusades; now, there seems to be no major point of contact.

On the most important issues, the Canadian and British prime ministers disagreed. Mr. Cameron outright rejected Mr. Harper’s request to abandon the proposed international “Robin Hood” bank tax, making it increasingly likely that Canada will be opposing all of Western Europe and the United States at the G20 summit.
