US Tax System: Republican tax policies are widening wealth gap

Speaker of the House John Boehner dusts off one of the more tired Republican cliches when he accuses President Obama of engaging in “class warfare” for advocating higher taxes for rich Americans. Republicans love the phrase because it lets them falsely imply that Democrats are Marxists without making the charge so explicit that they have to defend it.

If maintaining that wealthy Americans’ fair share of taxes is somewhat more than what they are paying now is class warfare, then call me a class warrior. But it takes two sides to make war. The fact is that the gap between rich and poor in the United States has increased steadily over the last 30 years, at the same time as income taxes have become steadily less progressive.

The real class warfare consists in pushing the legislation that helped widen the gap, as the Republicans have done, then blithely declaring with Mr. Boehner that “the rich pay enough taxes.”
