Namibia: EU Engages Country On Trade

The European Union (EU) is Namibia's second commercial partner after South Africa and well ahead of countries such as China or the United States of America, the Head of EU Delegation in Namibia, Raul Fuentes, said.

Fuentes spoke at the opening of a one-day EU-Namibia Political Dialogue that was attended by Foreign Affairs Minister Utoni Nujoma, EU and other senior government officials.

"The EU is arguably the first development partner in Namibia, with EU and Members States aid amounting to 70 percent of aid channeled to Namibia since independence," he said.

According to Fuentes, the EU current development programme amounts to over euro 131 million (N$1.3 billion), which makes the EU the leading donor in education, water and sanitation.

"Deep historical and social ties underpin these relations," said the EU official
