USA: Hurricane-Force Nor'Easter Blasts East Coast With Snow, Flooding

A nor’easter with hurricane-force wind gusts battered much of the East Coast on Saturday, flinging heavy snow that made travel treacherous or impossible, flooding coastlines, and threatening to leave bitter cold in its wake.

The storm thrashed parts of 10 states, with blizzard warnings that stretched from Virginia to Maine. Philadelphia and New York saw plenty of wind and snow, but Boston was in the crosshairs. The city could get more than 2 feet (61 centimeters) of snow by the time it moves out early Sunday.

The Netherlands: Roads and trains disrupted, schools shut as winter grips the Netherlands

The wintry weather continued to cause problems on the roads and railways on Monday morning. No newspapers have been delivered and primary schools remain closed in many places, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Leiden, due to the transport problems. They were due to open on Monday after six weeks of closure due to coronavirus.

The KNMI weather bureau has revised down its weather warning to code orange because of the continuing slippery conditions, but both motoring organisation ANWB and the transport ministry’s roads department say people should avoid all travel unless their journey is absolutely necessary.

Weather: Thanksgiving travel in the US threatened by deadly storm in eastern US

Millions of Americans in the northeast who are planning to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday this Thursday may not only encounter busy airports and congested highways, but also a deadly storm system bringing heavy winds, rain, snow and sleet to some of the most populous metro areas in the US.

With the storm gathering pace, the 43 million people who are expected to travel 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving were warned to avoid driving during the worst conditions slated for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Those days fall ahead of the Thursday Thanksgiving holiday and are among the busiest days of the year for air travel.

A powerful storm that left at least 21 people dead over the weekend and has already created a mess for air travelers in the western US, especially in Texas, is now threatening to do the same at some of the busiest – and most delay-prone – US airports along the eastern seaboard, meteorologists said Monday.

It forced American Airlines to cancel nearly 1,000 flights at its Dallas/Fort Worth hub Sunday and Monday. AA hopes to resume normal operations there by Monday afternoon, but that could be just in time for new problems to sprout in the East.

The storm will bring heavy snow to interior sections of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, but the biggest problems for Thanksgiving fliers will likely be the windy, cloudy and rainy conditions at some the busiest US airports: Logan in Boston, JFK and La Guardia in New York, Newark International, Philadelphia International, Thurgood Marshall in Baltimore and Dulles and Reagan National in Washington.

Britain is bracing itself for a weekend whiteout, with widespread snowstorms and strong winds set to lash the country and postpone the arrival of spring weather even further.

Before the onslaught of snow tomorrow, the south-west of England and Wales will today endure flooding caused by heavy and persistent rain.

The band of rain will turn to light snow when it reaches northern Wales and northern England tonight and hit Scotland by tomorrow morning.

Germany: No thaw in sight - Germany under snow

Germany has been hit by unusually heavy snowfall, causing traffic disruption and dangerous driving conditions. Meteorologists say the cold front is sweeping in from Scandinavia, and will continue for some time yet.

Up to 20 inches of snow has fallen in recent days and the plummeting temperatures have resulted in widespread black-ice, leading to an increase in accidents, for both pedestrians and drivers alike.

In Bavaria, more than 50 people have been injured in several hundred incidents. Meanwhile no planes could land more at Vienna Airport and other airports in neighbouring countries are also reporting flight disruptions.

The next few days will see the frosty weather continue and drivers are being urged to drive extremely carefully.

The Netherlands: Snow causes major traffic problems, trains and planes cancelled

Heavy snow over much of the country this morning caused serious disruption on the roads and led Dutch Rail (NS) to adapt train services. Some flights from Schiphol airport were also delayed. By 14.30 hours there were 800 km of traffic jams, as the snow moved southwards over the country.

The NS (Dutch Railroad) said it was reducing Sprinter train services for the rest of the day but Intercity trains would continue as normal. By the afternoon the heavy snow led to chaos on the roads and serious disruption to train services, with no rush hour trains to and from Utrecht and Amsterdam.  Up to 14 cm of snow fell in some places, causing serious problems on the roads.

By 16.00 hrs, some 900 accidents on minor and provincial roads had been reported and the ANWB motoring organization urged people in central parts of the country not to drive.

The Dutch KNMI weather channel issued a code orange severe weather warning in western provinces, saying up to 10 cm of additional snow could fall in some places. They said that once the snow has fallen it will remain very cold and dry, with heavy frosts at night. The weekend will again be clear and sunny.  The KNMI expects the cold weather to continue until at least next Friday.

Snow plays the Grinch again this Christmas in Europe

Snow creates havoc in air travel again this year in Europe, as many flights were halted or canceled due to heavy snowfall in the U.K. and several other parts of Europe. Two thousand people have been stranded at Paris' Charles de Gaulle, media reports stated, as snow fall hits France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The Charles de Gaulle airport canceled about 50 percent of its flights due to a shortage of de-icing fluid.

Netherlands: Snow brings chaos across Europe

Heavy snowfall has caused travel chaos across swaths of Europe as the Christmas holiday exodus got under way. Retailers faced disruption of supplies to their stores on Friday in the middle of the seasonal shopping rush and numerous airports across the continent were forced to close.

In Germany, the worst travel problems were caused in North Rhine-Westphalia, where snowfalls of up to 40cm were reported in some areas between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Sections of the motorway network had to be closed, after lorries were abandoned on the roads.

Heavy snow also caused major disruption in the Netherlands, leading to the closure of Schiphol airport near Amsterdam, which had expected to process about 125,000 travellers on Friday at the start of the Christmas break.

Several motorways were also closed following “complete chaos”, according to a motoring organisation. Amsterdam suspended all bus services, and the rail network has also been severely disrupted.
The national weather institute issued a warning in the afternoon, calling on people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Early winter snow storm paralyzes parts of EU

highway in Belgium during snow storm ( Photo EU-Digest)

EU-digest

AFP - Early winter snows forced French authorities to close the Eiffel Tower on Thursday and disrupted transport as northwest Europe shuddered under a pre-Christmas cold snap. The French capital and much of the north of the country awoke to find a seven-centimetre (three inch) blanket of snow, which delayed flights from Charles de Gaulle airport by up to two hours. Snow also fell in Britain, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and weather experts forecast worse to come, with disruption especially in Scotland and northern England. The northern Netherlands experienced the worst falls in four years, with snow up to 25 centimetres deep in places, the national weather service said, while all bus services in the region were canceled. In Belgium black ice turned roads into skating rinks, particularly the Brussels ring road and the motorway from the capital to Lille in northern France. Numerous flights were canceled and delayed at Brussels airport.
