EU enlargementThe man from Brussels fidgets in the back of the car as the mountain road straightens out before us. To our right, just a few kilometres from the convoy we are travelling in, is the last known hide-out of Europe’s most notorious war criminal. And a few hours beyond the pine forests is the site of the continent’s worst massacre since the second world war. Green cliffs hang above us. The four-car convoy motors past cows and sheep that wander from tiny patches of land into the road. Occasionally we glimpse buildings abandoned after the “ethnic cleansing” of a decade ago."
