France jails 25 in terror trial
A French court has convicted 25 people and sentenced the to up to ten years in prison for plotting attacks in France in support of rebels in Chechnya. The French Interior Ministry said there was no doubt that "one or several terrorist attacks were being planned in the relatively short-term". During the trial, French media speculated that possible targets included the Eiffel Tower, Les Halles shopping center, and the Russian embassy. However, the prosecution was unable to prove the alleged target. Allegations that toxic chemicals were to be used in the attacks were also not proven.
Despite the lack of evidence, only two of the 27 accused were acquitted.
