Eurovision-style event to mark 50 years of the European Union runs into trouble
European countries singing against each other in an attempt to share their cultures - sound familiar? Well the European Commission want to push forward their plans for an ESC-style event to mark the 50th anniversary of the EU next year - that's despite massive opposition from a number of national governments.
A working group in Brussels has been looking into a number of festivities to ''celebrate'' the signing of the Treaty of Rome in 1957. Commissioners say they want the celebrations to highlight the benefits of European integration - but it seems the plans are facing ever stronger opposition. According to the latest document (July 13th), an event entitled "Europe Singing and Giving" could be organised in all member states next summer with a variety of musical styles.
However a number of national governments say the costs for the event are just way too high - but many feel the real reason is that they fear massive ridicule from the press if the event goes ahead. There's also complaints from some new-member states who say the whole idea reminds them of ''Stalinist'' events were the population were forced to sing. Note EU-Digest: Why not turn it into a contest for the best new European singer from the EU, whereby each member country selects a new star, who then competes against all the other new European singing stars for the top position.
