Middle East - More turmoil: Israel blasts Beirut airport and Gaza ministry - Sam F. Ghattas
Early today, Israeli warplanes struck the runways of Beirut's international airport in the Lebanese capital's Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs. A senior airport official announced the facility closed shortly after the shells landed and asked scheduled flights to divert to Cyprus, the neighboring EU Mediterranean island. In Israel, the military confirmed it targeted Beirut airport, saying in a statement the facility "is a central hub for the transfer of weapons and supplies to the Hezbollah terrorist organization."
