Fonterra sends lawyer to Europe
Fonterra is mounting an emergency dash to Europe to fight a legal ruling blocking New Zealand butter exports worth millions of dollars. Fonterra's lead trade adviser, Philip Turner, and the cooperative's top lawyer will fly to Europe today to try to find a way around a European Court ruling last week that led to export licences being suspended.
On July 11, the European Court of Justice ruled in favour of a German dairy trader, Egenberger, after it challenged European Union regulations governing the granting of export licences. Among other things, Egenberger complained that import licences were issued only in Britain, so the system discriminated against European importers. The European Commission immediately suspended New Zealand butter exports, worth almost $270 million a year.
