LANS to slash the cost of using mobile phones abroad have been watered down following a highly successful lobbying campaign by the industry. The partial climbdown by European Commission officials on so-called 'roaming charges' is expected to be unveiled tomorrow in Brussels. Telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding will say that mobile companies will still be able to impose roaming charges in Europe, although they will be regulated to some degree.
The industry has also won a six-month delay on plans to cap the fees mobile phone users pay when travelling in European Union countries.
