U.S. welcomes EU decision to extend sanctions against Uzbekistan
The United States welcomed on Monday a European Union decision to extend sanctions imposed on Uzbekistan last year after a bloody clashes in the eastern province of Andijan."We share the European Union's concern about the human rights situation in Uzbekistan," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told a news briefing. "Respect and dignity for human rights is essential for the future prosperity of the Uzbek people and a necessary element of successful democratic reform," McCormack said in a statement.
In its Monday statement, the EU foreign ministers' meeting said "Considering the lack of progress with regard to the human rights situation in Uzbekistan, the EU Council has decided to extend the arms embargo for 12 months."
