Proposed Burqa ban dismissed as an election stunt - by MIKE CORDER
DUTCH political leaders hit the campaign trail yesterday, ahead of national elections that will decide whether the Netherlands will continue its tough treatment of immigrants. The issues of immigration and integration of mainly Muslim migrants living in the country had barely registered in weeks of campaigning until last week, when hardline immigration minister Rita Verdonk announced the governing coalition planned to ban the burqa and other face-covering clothing in public.
The proposal for a draft law was condemned by Muslims as an overreaction to a marginal problem and by the opposition Labour party as an election stunt.
