Europe’s Self-Censorship
Europeans are becoming adept at censoring themselves to avoid angering Islamists who think that they have the right and the obligation to tell the whole world how to live. Visual arts, journalism and literature are all under threat. As Cecelia Wikstrom, a member of the Swedish parliament and spokeswoman for cultural affairs for that country's Liberal Party, noted in a recent piece in the International Herald Tribune, just a few weeks ago a collection of ``provocative pencil sketches of Muhammad were suddenly lifted off the walls" by a gallery director in rural Sweden for fear of offending Muslims. Last year, a Mozart premiere in Berlin was canceled for fear that the show would offend them. In other words, Western culture is trimming its sails to traverse Islamist seas, and so some Western nations are effectively losing their independence to the oil power.
