Europe tries to block Fahey - Jacquelin Magnay

IT IS a fair bet John Fahey will be wearing a red tie this morning as he fronts a spectacularly divided election for the post of president of the World Anti-Doping Agency.Fahey is the sole candidate, but for the past two days the powerful European bloc of countries has been trying to derail his candidacy and pressure him to stand aside before tonight's vote."They have difficulty in accepting that a non-European is standing and has support from the four other regions," Fahey said last night. "I am comfortable though, and I am also confident that they will adhere to the WADA election process."

The Council of Europe sports ministers held a closed-door meeting after the WADA public authority meeting and announced they would not support Fahey and would request the WADA assembly to postpone the vote. Deputy secretary general of the Council of Europe Maud de Boer-Buquicchio said if a delay was denied, they would abstain from voting, sending a clear signal of their dismay and destroying the platform of consensus upon which WADA was formed.
