It now appears that the opposition leader, former Foreign Minister Rosa Otunbayeva, has taken over running the country. Otunbayeva has unilaterally appointed other colleagues from the opposition to an interim govern--many of whom served under the toppled president at various times. The capital's hospitals are full of dead and wounded, according to various reports, with some estimates as high as hundreds of fatalities countrywide.
There's a great deal of conjecture about Russian involvement in recent events. A substantial Time magazine online report says, "Moscow has a lot to gain and Washington a lot to lose from the bloody upheaval." The report goes on to quote various ousted officials claiming that opposition figures, under questioning, had confessed to getting support from Moscow.
