For all the Congressional battles this year over health reform, financial regulations and energy changes, an even bigger threat to America's future is coming from what already is in place, U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said Friday.
The growing debt from Medicare, Social Security and other entitlement programs "undermines our economic and national security," Sen. Corker said.
With 40 percent of U.S. treasury bonds being sold outside the United States, Sen. Corker said U.S. independence, security and growth is threatened by the growing size of government and its debt. Beyond the $13 trillion federal debt, Sen. Corker said there is more than $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities from Medicare, Social Security and federal housing agencies. "The elephant in the room is getting control of our fiscal affairs," he told reporters and editors of the Times Free Press.
