Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin vowed Saturday to quickly determine the cause of the plane crash in western Russia that killed Poland's president, with attention focusing on why the pilots attempted to land despite thick fog. "Everything must be done to establish the reasons for this tragedy in the shortest possible time," Russian news agencies quoted Putin as saying after he arrived in Smolensk to visit the site of the crash.
The powerful Russian premier was appointed earlier Saturday by President Dmitry Medvedev to head a special commission to investigate the crash, which killed Lech Kaczynski and numerous other top Polish military, economic and political officials.
As the probe gets under way, a Russian air force official said the plane's pilots had repeatedly ignored instructions from air traffic controllers.
