Opposition leader declares victory in Sweden

In Sweden the Opposition leader Fredrik Reinfeldt has declared victory for his centre-right alliance in today's election, ending 12 years of Social Democrats. The Social Democrat Prime Minister Goran Persson admitted defeat at around 10:30pm EST.

Mr Reinfeldt, who is likely to be the next Prime Minister, says he wants to stimulate job growth by cutting taxes and reducing some welfare benefits. The forecast, based on official results from a third of the voting districts, showed the centre-right opposition with 47.4% of the vote compared to 47.0% for the Social Democrats and their two supporting parties.

The opposition, who cemented their unity last week in a meeting at Christian Democrat leader Göran Hägglund’s house in Småland, repeatedly attacked the government for not doing enough to tackle unemployment. In return, Prime Minister Göran Persson and his coalition partners attacked the opposition’s proposed benefit cuts for the long-term unemployed. The opposition, said Persson, were proposing an “American programme ”.
