The EU has expressed its support and condolences for the people of Japan after a massive earthquake off the country's north-east coast today caused widespread death and destruction.
Speaking after a summit of EU leaders in Brussels which discussed the situation in Libya and north Africa, Herman Van Rompuy, the European Council president, said that EU leaders had asked Catherine Ashton, the EU's foreign policy chief, and the European Commission to “mobilise all appropriate assistance” for Japan.
