EU To Open Office In Benghazi For Assisting Libya Rebels

European Union announced Wednesday it plans to open an office in the rebel-held eastern Libyan city of Benghazi to provide assistance to the leadership of the rebels fighting the autocratic regime of Col. Moammar Qadhafi.

"I intend to open an office in Benghazi so that we can move forward on the support we've discussed to the people," EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said while addressing the European Parliament on Wednesday.

According to Ashton, the prime function of the new office would be "to support civil society, to support the interim national council ... to support security sector reform, to build on what the people ask us to."
