The former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev warned President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that public unrest would grow unless they admitted that the election had been fraudulent and agreed to hold a new one.
"With each passing day, more and more Russians have disbelieved that the announced election results are honest," he said.
"In my view, ignoring public opinion discredits the authorities and destabilizes the situation.
